August 15, 2016
Dear Students and Families-
I hope you all had a great summer and got to enjoy friends and family. I am looking forward to the start of a great school year at Hampden Academy and wanted to share some pertinent information. Please make sure to review the first quarter important dates, which include preseason practice times.
Please log on to PowerSchool to view your schedule on Tuesday, August 16th. The website can be found at: https://sad22.powerschool.com/public/home.html.
If you would like to request a change, the guidance office will be open beginning August 18th, with appointments beginning on August 19th. Mrs. Huston, the guidance secretary can be reached at 862-4111.
Schedule Changes: Schedule changes should be made before announced deadlines and be based on sound academic reasons. Typical academic reasons for making schedule changes are:
1. Strengthening of a program by adding a course
2. Dropping an additional course beyond the requisite number of six
3. Assignment to a teacher with whom the student previously failed or experienced difficulty
4. Recommendation of a P.E.T. or a 504 meeting
5. A student’s ability is inconsistent with the ability level of the class.
Note: A preference for having a particular teacher is NOT a sound academic reason.
Please note priority appointments will be given to students without a schedule or those who are new to our district. Students can add classes until September 7 and drop classes until September 14.
Class of 2020 (Freshmen), Transfer Students, and Foreign Exchange Students:
Welcome! You are invited to attend a four hour orientation on Friday, August 19th from 10 – 2. In order to attend, you need to get a sign-up form from the main office. On Tuesday, August 30th, you will begin your first day of school. When you arrive at Hampden Academy (no later than 7:50 AM please) you will be greeted by our All Student Body (ASB) Mentors and they will make sure you get to your Academic Advisory. Those Mentors will work with you throughout the day to ensure you have a smooth transition into Hampden Academy.
Upperclassmen – Welcome Back!
Your first day of school is Wednesday, August 31st. Please plan on arriving at school no later than 7:50 so we can get started at the first bell. We will start the day with Academic Advisory.
Hampden Academy is a 1:1 technology school, providing Chromebooks to all students. However, in order for your child to use their Chromebook and to bring the Chromebook home, we must have an updated parent/guardian signature. In addition to the Chromebook parent/guardian signature form, students will also receive a number of required forms; all forms must be returned before a student is issued their Chromebook. Students will be given the required paperwork during the first week of school in their advisory. We encourage students to get that paperwork signed and bring it back to school as soon as possible to receive their Chromebook. If your student has fees from the previous year that are still due, they must be paid prior to being issued a Chromebook.
This year, RSU#22 is implementing a new dress code policy. To ensure your time at Hampden Academy is as successful as possible, please review the policy and do your best to adhere to it. For your convenience, it is provided below:
The responsibility for dress, hygiene and appearance of students rests with individual students
and their parent(s)/guardian(s). Students should use sound judgment that reflects respect for
themselves and others in dress and grooming. The goal of the school district is to provide a safe,
healthy and non-discriminatory environment for educating students for maximum academic and
social development. In keeping with this goal, the Board will not interfere with personal choices unless these choices create a disruptive influence on the school program or affect the health or safety of others. The following restrictions shall be enforced. These include but are not limited to:
A. Articles of clothing that promote the use of tobacco, alcohol or other drugs may not be worn
on school grounds (when school is in session) or at school functions.
B. Clothing, footwear, insignia or accessories that are intended to identify the wearer as a
member of a particular gang are prohibited.
C. Articles of clothing that are sexual, vulgar, lewd, indecent, or include suggestive innuendoes
or insulting words (e.g. racial/ethnic slurs) are prohibited. These items include but are not
● Strapless, halter tops or any other top that is low cut or displays cleavage
● Clothing that is transparent and/or reveals any undergarment
● Clothing that reveals the midriff

furniture) is prohibited.
E. Excessive perfume, after-shave, and other fragrances are prohibited.
F. Hats, hoods, and sunglasses are not to be worn inside the building except with permission
from administration due to medical, religious, or cultural reasons.
G. Clothing or accessories which promote harm or ways to harm one’s self or others are
H. Footwear posing a safety concern is prohibited.
School administrators or teachers may require special clothing for health and safety reasons.
However, no particular brand may be required.
Athletics – for details go to ha.rsu22.us
In the spring of 2010 the RSU #22 Board of Directors approved an Athletic Participation Fee due to the rising costs associated with the support of the district’s athletic programs and declining resources locally and statewide. The fee is $50.00 per student per sport. No student will be denied an opportunity to play because of financial hardship. There will be an opportunity for any who need it to anonymously get a Hampden Academy Athletic Boosters scholarship. If you have any questions please call Mr. Bisson, Athletic Administrator at 862-3985. School sports encourage students to develop discipline, respect, responsibility, fairness, trustworthiness, good citizenship, and good sportsmanship. We encourage all students to participate in some form of physical exercise and group activity as we know that participation helps improve physical and emotional wellbeing.
Prior to a student stepping onto the field their coach must have a signed emergency card, a consent form, the drug and alcohol policy form and proof of a current physical. These forms are due no later than the first day of tryouts/practice. No student may participate without all four documents. Physicals are good for thirteen months and coaches are provided with the names of students who have current physicals on file. The forms can be downloaded from the HA website (ha.rsu22.us) or picked up at the HA Main Office. During Meet the Coaches Night on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 6:30 Mr. Bisson and coaches will review their expectations as well as the tobacco products, drugs, and alcohol policy and procedures. It is required that you and your parents/guardians attend this meeting. Parents, this is a great opportunity to establish a connection with your child’s coach.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to a positive start to the school year.
