Hampden – The Hampden Academy Broncos looked to kick off their second season with a win in a quest to win another gold ball for their Unified Basketball team, which they captured in 2015 on a David Manzo buzzer beater hook shot in overtime. On opening night of the 2016 season, three Broncos scored in double digits as Hampden defeated the Orono Red Riots 45-35.
Hampden went up 10-0 with 4:03 left in the opening quarter on 10 straight points by sophomore Kenny Brewer-Frazee. The quarter closed with the Broncos on top 12-2.
Hampden and Orono tied 8-8 in the second period, with Isaiah Palmer scoring six of the eight points for Hampden. The Broncos held a 20-10 lead at half time.
Over the course of the second half, the two teams played to a 25-25 tie. Robbie Martin scored eight points for Hampden in the second half, and Dan Fitzgerald scored six points for the Red Riots in the half.
Frazee topped the Broncos with 14 points, while Palmer added 11 points and Tyler Hewey had 10 points. Martin scored eight points and Kelsey Tripp chipped in with two points.
Fitzgerald led the Riots with six points and Jacob Long added five points. Ryan Fandel, Ben Clancy, Marius DeLanne and Dylan Farnham each scored four points. Zach Bowden, Nathan Norris, Makayla Sennell and Jacquelyn Babcock each chipped in with two points.
