Season Summary Written by Coach Alex Townsend:
“The Hampden Academy Broncos 2018 Varsity Boys Tennis Season was a season not without its highs and lows. The Team fielded returning player and lone senior Zach Flannery as Captain at #1 Singles, alongside returning junior players Elliot Small, Will Drake, Drew Johnston, and Bryce Nickels who all contributed immensely, as well as new freshmen players Oliver Bois, Owen Flannery, and Liam Castrucci.
Finally, first year participating Junior Aiden Babbit topped off the roster. The Broncos started off the season 1-2 with a close win over a tough Bangor squad, a tough loss to #1 Camden Hills and a close 3-2 loss to #3 Mt. Ararat. They then responded with a 2-1 tally in their next three matches with wins against Edward Little, Brunswick, and a close loss to Mt. Blue. The Broncos followed it up with another 2-1 stretch beating both Skowhegan and Cony while dropping a match to Lewiston. Sitting at 5-4 and optimistic, the Broncos sputtered into the playoffs as a #7 seed (6-6) after losing to Camden Hills, facing defeat in a tight 3-2 match to #4 Bangor and defeating Skowhegan 5-0 once again. Before the playoffs began, Zach Flannery, Elliot Small and Bryce Nickels all had a chance to qualify for States out of their regional brackets. Zach and Elliot cruised to the round of 48 state tournament in Portland with both 6-2 6-3 victories over their opponents in the final. Bryce made it to the final of his region and faced a tough match vs the #5 regional seed from Lee Academy. He lost a close one 0-6 6-2 4- 6. After regionals, Zach was seeded 8 in the state and Elliot was unseeded. However, both Broncos singles players made the round of 16 coming up against tough opponents. Zach’s high school tennis career ended with a loss against Quinn Clarke of Portland high school 4-6 1-6. Elliot’s junior season came to halt against the #2 seed in the state tournament Declan Fitsimmons 1-6 3-6. In the postseason the Broncos went on the road as #7 seed to face #2 Lewiston in the quarterfinals. After Zach and Elliot both won at #1 and #2 singles, and Bryce dropping his match at #3 as well as #1 doubles losing a battle, the match was notched at 2-2 coming down to #2 doubles. After a very close three set battle the Broncos were defeated by Lewiston 2-3 with the score of the final match coming down to 3-6 6-2 4-6. Next Year the Broncos have much to look forward to and will only be losing talented senior Zach Flannery. Elliot, Bryce, and both doubles team should be returning for a strong 2019 season.”
